[rescue] We have decided to rehome the Origin 2000

My gf and I have been talking and we think its best if we rehome the Origin
2000, We do not have the power available it requires to even start to
restore it. And our township has enough red tape and permit bs that
getting our service upgraded to handle it would take a miracle.

So we are only asking to recoup the costs we have into it. About $350.

We want it to go to someone who will take the time to restore it and bring
it back to its former glory.

We are located in Mid Michigan

Tongue mostly in cheek here, but I see pot legalization on the
ballot in Michigan this November. Get with the local wheeler-dealer(s)
and tell them you want to get a grow operation ready to "get in on the
ground floor". You might be surprised at the help you may get cutting
through the red tape. ;-)

More seriously, is there maybe a local hacker/makerspace you can join?
They share the power, you share the wealth, everybody benefits. Just a
thought. Nothing like that around here; embarrassing themselves on FB is
the highest ambition of most, and people would mostly walk off with your
stuff. Hopefully different where you are.

There is nothing like that in rural Michigan. I know a guy who could
upgrade the service for a case of beer no permits do it on a saturday night
kind of deal though lol :P

Careful, IT is listening, remember. Reading meters these days, too.
Your guy might have second thoughts about that.

Good luck with the rehoming, if nothing else.

I'm sorry to say, Jim, that this has pretty much become the "new
normal" here in the US. Some areas are worse than others, of course,
but it's everywhere now. Holding down the couch is a goal in and of itself.

Doh! :-) Look, I was having a bad day. Sorry for drift into the
off-topicality. So, does anyone have any more info on the Indiana U
Origins? I did see
https://www.hpcwire.com/1997/05/16/indiana-u-installs-64-node-origin2000/.

Wondering if anyone on the list happened to be at IU back in the day
and could shed any light.

64 nodes, 64 procs. Cute. ;-)

Our O2000 at the time was 48 nodes, 6144 processors. 128 procs each. By
the time I got on the job it already dropped to #29 on the top500 in 2002.
The current big computer has the compute power of the previous entire
system down into just one rack. Buck Rogers stuff.

I appreciate I'm a little late on this one, but...

I have fired up six Onyx2 racks (although only one Graphics module, I had
all six Compute modules going) on a 100A service out in the sticks of
Iowa. Hell, I've got half an E10k running right now.

Unless it's a 208v 3-ph model it'll run just fine off a single oven 220v
outlet, just replace the TwistLock with a NEMA30P. If it -is- a 208 3ph
model I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard to find a 220v power supply
and to take a run at the input wiring. I rewired my Onyx rack (Onyx "1"
Terminator) from 208 to 220, for example, and if I can do it any idiot
can.

Also, for scale, I paid $300 for those six Onyx2 racks about ten years ago
from Boeing Surplus out of Missouri. I think I paid $40 for the Origin
2400 standalone rack (although it did some with a nifty APC SmartUPS 5000
for 'free').
