Hi, I just picked up a Tadpole Ultrabook IIe ( U50-14-2Y-1G ) laptop and
would really like to find a pdf of the manual, I managed to find one for
the IIi but that is totally different to my IIe and I have looked
everywhere and can't seem to find one. I also need the patches for Solaris
8 and the Tadpole specific software like Powertools, I found a mirror of
ftp.tadpole.com but for some reason the Ultrabook IIe directory is missing,
iso's of the original disks would be great then I could get this laptop to
its original working state. At the moment I have NetBSD 7.1.1 running on it
but I would like to get Solaris 8 installed, I have a complete new Solaris
8 media package but it doesn't recognise the built in keyboard and trackpad
during install so I have to use external ones just to complete installation
but that is not ideal for a laptop, I guess the Tadpole install cd has the
drivers for the keyboard and trackpad where-as the Sun disks do not.

thanks.
Robert Bell.

Flextronics does support for all the Tadpole machines, their site has the user
manual and Solaris 8/9/10 drivers for the IIe. The driver discs are for
specific Solaris versions though, hopefully your 8 media is 02/02, 02/04, or
07/03.
A USB keyboard/mouse has to be used for the installation, the internals
donbt work until the driver CD is installed.

Thank you Brandon and Peter that Flextronic website was perfect I would
never of found it, my version of Solaris 8 is 10/0 so not sure
if that will be a problem but I also have Solaris 10 11/06 which I will
try to install.B My problem now is that before I saw these replies I was
messing with the OBP and like an idiot managed to corrupt the device
input setting and now my Tadpole boots up but now I have no keyboard
input be it internal or external usb so I can't do anything. I tried to
connect another computer using the serial port but they are not seeing
the Tadpole
I've tried several PC's using Putty and various other terminals and I
tried my SGI O2 but no luck. Not really sure what to do to fix this
issue, I can't find any
details on how to reset the OBP to defaults without a keyboard, the only
thing I can think of is to order a new Dallas ds1553w nvram chip.
Man I feel such a muppet making such a ridiculous mistake :-[

yep tried the Stop-N but the problem is I have no keyboard input to be
able to do that. What I did for some mad reason is
decide to change the Devalias for Keyboard but for some reason my entry
got truncated to keyboa and so now when the laptop
boots it says it can't find that device and hense I have no keyboard
input from the built in keyboard or an external usb keyboard
and therefore have no way to reset to defaults.

Hi

Try removing the NVRAM and powering up without it. It should error on POST but
maybe you will get a serial console?

Also there may be a switch pressing sequence option during power on, but you
would need the docs for that.

Success! Removed the nvram chip and powered up, the system was set to
defaults so I had keyboard access then I plugged the
nvram back in while the system was still powered up and then did a
set-defaults, rebooted and the system came back up set to
defaults and booted into 9, so happy. Thanks for your help Peter, now
all I need is to get hold of the VWA cd or its contents so
I can have a fully working laptop with all the Tadpole special features,
anyone know where I can get hold of this disk or its contents?

There is one currently listed on ebay for a starting price of 1500 usd.
It is an ultrasparc, 200 MHz.
Looks new!

Hi Robert

As mentioned before I think, Flextronics have a whole bunch of downloads with
Solaris specific installs with the looks of it, so that should give you the
relevant packages you want I think?

http://www.flextronicssupport.com

The package list is contained in this document with the looks of it.

It turns out the files I needed were part of the Solaris 10 11/06 patch
upgrade and the VWA files for Solaris 8 were on the
Flextronics webpage. I now have a fully working Solaris 10 system which
will be my main setup but I want to install Solaris 8
onto another drive so I can have an original version of the Tadpole. The
only problem is that I can't get the Solaris 8 10/00 media set
that I bought to install, it starts to boot then there is a kernel panic
and it reboots. Peter do you still have an iso available, I can send you
a link to my Dropbox account?
