[rescue] NeXT cube Raspberry Pi case

A (for real) NeXT Cube system would be awesome! If I recall correctly, Mr. Bill (our host) acquired a cube back in 2014.

Sadly, no ham radio stuff.

Have mostly older SPARC based systems accumulated. Have a nice matched set of 280R boxes that need a new home. Also, a couple of
smaller 1U boxes (Netra T1).

All weigh a ton. No black hardware on my end yet, but bet a Cube would also.

Any chance you are on the south coast?

Jerry
Or, offer me some interesting computer or ham radio swap fodder and have an
actual complete NextCube system.

Do you have an '040 or '030 Cube?

Cheers

Wondering, first hand, if anyone here has taken on this as a project, and how
it turned out for them.

Sounds like (possibly) gears are turning in your head about maybe creating one
of these ?

You'd have to paint the colored N e X T letters on yourself.
If you want to make it super-fancy, you would print with ABS, sand it down,
spray with automobile primer, sand it lightly, spray with matte black paint.B
It would look very, very sharp if you did that.
(looks thoughfully at full spool of black PLA filament on shelf...)

A few weeks ago, there was a small flurry of activity on several Tech sites with people discussing a Raspberry Pi case that was
built out to look like a (miniature) NeXT cube.

Several of those articles included links where someone could download the appropriate files where someone who was knowledgeable with
such things (I'm not) could 3D print a replica NeXT cube Raspberry Pi case for themselves.

Here are a few links with pics if you aren't familiar with what I'm talking about.

<https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2066088>

<https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/5ptn2s/next_cube_raspberry_pi_23_case/>

<http://www.ninamakes.co.uk/builds/next-computer-replica-raspberry-pi-case/>

several of the articles suggest that after everything is 3D printed, there is at least a moderate amount of after-work necessary to
getting the case into becoming a 'nice' looking case.

Very little experience personally with 3D printed stuff, although this looks pretty neat to me.

Wondering if anyone here has pursued getting one of these, and If you have any comments you might share.

Thanks,

Jerry

Yep, thanks to Steve Hatle. I got the cable that lets me hang a VGA monitor
off the non-ADB soundbox.

Beautiful. I am envious, and I am even more annoyed with myself that I
didn't near-bankrupt myself and buy the one available in my part of
South London about 5y ago.

For my money, the most beautiful computer, and most beautiful GUI, ever made.

My complements on your machine and getting it running!

Beautiful system!

But oof, OPENSTEP 4.2 in 16MB. 32MB is barely enough since it has to have both
the NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP frameworks loaded most of the time. With a 68040
cube you should be able to go to 64MB or 128MB (depending on whether itbs a
turbo logic board) and itbll make a huuuuge difference.

Thanks for the post, I will stuff that piece of info with the rest of my NeXT data.

FWIW, its almost always the plan to max out the available ram on any vintage system I acquire, but, its even better to have a
legitimate reason to do so.

Yeah I just need to get enough 4M parity simms to go to 64M
