Date: October 11, 2017 at 1:08:17 PM CDT
As part of our cleanout to vacate our current server room, I have
8x SLC motherboards
2x ELC motherboards
Some parallel/AUI cables for SparcStations (similar to those on the
back of a SparcStation 20.)
5x Ultra 10s
Enterprise E450 and associated A1000 disk array
Enterprise E250
3x Sun Fire 280R
Sun Fire V240
3x Netra T5220
The E450 and E250 systems are "tower" models, while the rest of
the Sun Fire and Netra's are rack-mount. The E450 is on casters.
I should have rails for most of the equipment. The Sun Fire systems
are very heavy.
The systems do not have drives, although I have trays. I also have
an assortment of SCA2 compatible drives which can be placed into them.
The 280R systems appear to use FC, which I unfortunately do not have.
If someone takes the E450/A1000 combo, I can likely wipe enough drives
to fill it.
Items are located in Evanston at around Sheridan/Noyes St.
I can be available for pickup on Saturday, which makes this convenient
for those individuals looking at attending the TI User Group's Faire
at the Evanston Library. The location is less than a mile north.
I can possibly hold items for another week, although we are under
heavy pressure to vacate the room as quickly as possible.

Anything not spoken for by Monday, will be allocated to the e-waste
pile.

They are fairly standard, very nice UltraSPARC-T2 systems. I run a
couple of them; they do all the heavy lifting around here in terms of
network services, both internal and external. I also run a few for clients.

I put myself down for one of those, as I'm local and know Christopher
(and can vouch for his all-around-good-egg status). Does anyone have
a source for the drive trays/sleds for them? 2.5" SATA/SAS drives I
can get from other brand servers but of course the sleds are unique to
Sun.

They're easily found on eBay.

I'd love to have a spare T5220 here but have no way currently to get
one to Pittsburgh from Chicago. :-(

The original poster said they had suitable trays, if not drives and trays for
those systems. If not, they should be plentiful on eBay.

Can anyone narrow this down, possibly to a state?

Time for a forehead slap, Jerry - the subject line would suggest it is a

Huh, sure could be. I'm six hours away in Iowa, so maybe it's just an
assumption we'd make around here. Apologies, I wasn't trying to be a smart

I have no idea where Evanston might be.
Can anyone narrow this down, possibly to a state?
Time for a forehead slap, Jerry - the subject line would suggest it is a suburb
of Chicago.

No, no, I pride myself on be a smart.arse, and frequently tell people its better
than being a dumb.arse.

I certainly wasn't offended at all.

Oh, and I forgot from my earlier reply, thank you for replying with an answer.

Per state, there is a lot of town/city name duplication, so it's always nice
when the poster sticks up specifics.

Following up on Lionel's post, I would love to have one or both of those
T5220's, but unless shipping is an option, it would probably be cheaper to pick
one up on eBay or something similar vs a drive to the great white north.

Maybe for some.
I never would have pulled Chicago from chiclassiccomp.
Maybe a local thing?
Huh, sure could be. I'm six hours away in Iowa, so maybe it's just an assumption
we'd make around here. Apologies, I wasn't trying to be a smart arse.
Enjoy the day;

Q: anyone got a lead on an RJ-45 serial to USB adapter that is known to both
work well with Sun equipment (like, say, a T5220) and a windows
laptop/desktop?

Ibve got Cisco light blue cables that will put my sun console on a nine pin
serial port, and while I still have desktops with serial ports on them, for
flexibility sake Ibd like to get a suitable serial<->USB cable compatible
with sun and Cisco management ports.

Any pointer to reasonably-priced, known-good cables?

Thanks,

Lionel

We have for a long time used the Keyspan device (USA-19HS), which Tripplite
might now own? They were certainly cheap when I bought them some years ago.

Last year I also bought for my Unix SAs a cable with a singe USB port but
two serial cables, which they liked for managing modern Oracle (Sun) SPARC
gear. Usually they use MacBooks, FWIW.

Will beat me to the punch, so I'm going to back up his comments.

I have been using keyspan/triplite USB->serial converters for well over a
decade. They work great, nothing bad to say about any of their stuff.

On the Mac, the converter requires drivers. It just works out of the gate with
Solaris, or your favorite Solaris based distro.

As, it sounds like many others do, I'm also using the light blue or black Cisco
cables.

Software wise, typically use Z-term on the Mac. On Solaris, depending on
release, I just open some type of terminal window (i.e. cmdtool, dtterm,
gnome-term) and use the "tip" command. I assumed that 'tip' was native to all
Unix's and Unix clones, but maybe not. Either way, you just need to know how
fast you want to connect at, and which USB port to talk thru.

i.e. 9600 connection from USB0

# tip -9600 /dev/cua/0

115200 connection from USB1

# tip -115200 /dev/cua/1

at $HOME, I use tip infrequently enough that I just wrote a few shell scripts
that do everything I don't want to remember.

Once connected, typically a <CR> or two is required to bring up your login (or
what ever) prompt. Most stuff is N-8-1 that I see these days, but if you end up
with something that isn't, just hit the man page.

Assuming a Unix box (i.e. not a Cisco router or switch), once you are logged in
, /usr/openwin/bin/resize (or /bin/resize on Solaris 11 proper) is your friend.

Good luck.

Lionel, do your question indicate that you are going to end up with one of the
T5220's?

No, like a few others I concluded that a T5220 from eBay was simpler all
around for me. I picked up an 8-core, 32 Gig T5220 w/o drive sleds (but with
2x dual 4 Gig FDDI interface cards) with free shipping for what I feel was a
great price.

Ibve ordered a couple $9.70 RJ-45 to USB cables as well, and crossing my
fingers a couple drive sleds appear for less than $12/ea - I can get
new-in-box sleds on eBay shipped for about $12/ea. My plan is to stuff it with
some bjunk boxb consumer SATA SSD and HDs and dink around with it.

I considered buying a second unit to give me spare PS, denser RAM, and maybe a
sled or two, but Ibm trying hard to fight that temptation. I literally have
a small stack of older, smaller sun boxes that need to leave my house soon
(U30, U60, U5 & U10, etc) - any interest in Dallas Metro Area? Ibll drive a
fair distance to shed these (the more you take, the further Ibll drive)... I
also have a very big Sun something or other I need to shed - itbs an
E450-sized machine I got from a list member back in PA several years ago, the
model escapes me, but it runs on 110V.

Hey Lionel,

any chance you meant FC (Fiber Chanel) or FCAL 4 Gb cards here? Vs FDDI?

To the best of my knowledge, FDDI was limited to 100 Mbit/s, and the only FDDI
cards I every witnessed in Sun equipment was S-bus based. No actual insight
here, there certainly could have been PCI-??? based FDDI cards for SPARC equipment.

There were/are many PCI FDDI boards that work on SPARC machines.
Years ago I used several models from JNI.

Thanks Dave,

You learn something every day.

OTOH, I'm still pretty certain that FDDI, and even its copper counter-part CDDI
never ventured above or below 100 Mb.

If that comment is also incorrect, I would love to read more. My one and only
FDDI experience was implementation of a FDDI MAN backbone on Laughlin AFB back
in the early-mid 1990's.

It was good stuff in its day.

That's because it was designed at the outset for storage use not
interactive use that Ethernet was designed for. Ethernet, to this day,
remains sub-optimal for large-payload high-density work which is the
hallmark of SAN architecture. "Right tool for the job.", and whatnot.

By the by, has anyone heard from Mr. Bill? I'm starting to get a
bit concerned because I haven't read him recently.

Cheers!

Checking his Twitter feed[1], he's still recuperating.

Last update on his GoFundMe (Oct 3 I guess) [2]:
Surgery was on the 22nd. Had a complication and they had to switch from
lapropscopic to full open surgery, so I have a 10"+ incision with
staples.

Have been home since last Wednesday the 27th.

Things hurt. Recovering slowly.

It absolutely was. Our higher up command had initially pushed for 100Mb
Ethernet for our backbone, and we fought (proverbially) tooth-n-nail to stop
that and go with FDDI.

The FDDI backbone worked extremely well during its service time. As I was
preparing to separate from the Military (I spent my last 5 years at Laughlin),
the battle was brewing to put in/replace the FDDI backbone with an ATM backbone.
Left to return to the real world before I saw the remainder of that battle.

But to jump into obscure, and from roughly the same time period, does anyone
remember HP's 100VG anylan technology?

I have no idea what I mean!

To my ignorant mind, there are fiber connections for drive devices and fiber
connections for interconnecting network elements (servers, switches, etc). As
the ports were external (on attached PCI-express cards) I said FDDI because I
assumed that FCAL was the drive attachment technology.

The eBay listing says two bdual port 4Gb FC HBAb...

Sorry for confusion, happy for Davidbs education.

FCAL is one possible configuration (Arbitrated Loop) of FibreChannel.
FibreChannel as a storage interconnect is a transport mechanism for the
SCSI protocol.

...and to completely break your brain, it's possible to run IP over a
FibreChannel interface.

And if that didn't do it, you can run SCSI for a storage interconnect
AND IP on the SAME FibreChannel interface, at the same time.

FibreChannel is a current high-end (primarily) storage interconnect
technology. FDDI is a no-longer-current network interconnect technology.

you should find them. The models I have work like a charm out the box with
my Mac.
