Discussion:
[rescue] solaris 9 binaries for Subversion?

I'm looking for Subversion binaries for Solaris 9. I started to
compile it, but got dragged into dependency hell and I don't want to
deal with it. I found some binary packages on line, but they are behind
a paywall (!)...Does anyone have this handy? I'm very frustrated and
just need to get a job done..

Hello Dave,

Sorry, I don't have a direct answer to your question, but possibly something that can assist.

I'm sure that most of us are aware that sunfreeware went commercial several years ago. This fact hasn't changed AFAIK.

Before it went commercial, there were quite a few mirrors of sunfreeware software, many that are still out there.

Fire up your browser and hit up duckduckgo, or your favorite search engine, and search for sunfreeware mirror.

This has worked for me assisting smaller clients with older SPARC equipment who were not aware that they were dependent upon old
sunfreeware binaries.

Good luck,

Jerry

They're really neat beasts. I had one many years ago. I traded it
away to someone for something, I've no idea whom or what. As with most
stuff like that, I regret it now. I'd love to find one again. Good
luck with your chase!

Tangentially related - would anyone have a Solaris 9 sparc install ISO
to hand? I had one back when but I can't seem to locate it any more :(
I'd like to see how well pkgsrc could build subversion or similar (I
have a couple of UltraSPARC systems and a sparc classic to hand, plus
qemu :)

Thanks

Let me know when you have the files. My outbound bandwidth is running
at saturation due to some stuff going on this week, so don't expect
great transfer rates.

If the transfer rate is too bad, let me know and I can set you up with a
set of sol-9-u7-sparc ISOs.

Well, if you have bandwidth to spare I'd be happy to be less of a
drain on Dave's :-p

Thanks

It's there to be used; don't worry about it unless it's too slow for
your needs. I have a large off-site backup will be going for a few days.

You are a gentleman/scholar (delete as appropriate)

Thanks - will resist the temptation to start them all downloading
concurrently & will ping you when done.

I suspect the next question I will have may be a bootstrap compiler to
get pkgsrc started.

On the off chance everything goes smoothly when I try to get pkgsrc
setup (laughs hysterically), are there any packages in which you might
be particularly interested?

I have Solaris Studio starting at v12.5 going many releases back. I
don't know which ones are ok with Solaris 9, though. Let's work on that
once you get the OS downloaded.

FWIW, I typically have better luck with GCC vs Sun/Oracle Studio.

Here are a list of versions/release dates.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_Developer_Studio>

Unfortunately, I haven't found a chart with shows which version of Sun Studio goes with which version of Solaris. Yep, I know that
there is a lot of overlap. Just seems that at some point in the past, there had been some chart which indicated the OS range that
each version of Sun Studio supported.

If someone has that URL, please share.

Thank,

Jerry

I'll mention TGCware again then :-) <https://jupiterrise.com/tgcware/>

You can get some binary packages to get you started here:
<https://jupiterrise.com/tgcware/sunos5.9_sparc/stable/> (i.e., GCC
and dependencies to bootstrap the build).

Then the entire build system, along with patches to the software, is
available here: <https://github.com/tgc/tgcwarev2-for-solaris>

You can use the GitHub sources to rebuild all the packages. I rebuilt
a large amount of the Sol8 stuff to run on v8 hardware (the 'official'
Sol8 binaries are for v8+/v9), it's quite a neat system to produce
packages.

Cordially,

I'm looking for Subversion binaries for Solaris 9.
tgcware supports Sol9 for UltraSPARC. No SVN, but there's git, perhaps
git-svn could help ?

<https://jupiterrise.com/tgcware/sunos5.9_sparc/stable/>

Good luck & cordially,

I have a GT Tower, and I believe that I have the cable and S-Bus board that
goes with it.
I should plug it in and see if it works.

studio 11 does both 8 and 9 and likes java 1.5 but not newer.
