It's been a hell of a year. My cancer surgery six months ago, my ongoing
chemo daily (pills) that have messed with my appetite, caused ALL of my
hair to turn bright white, and make me take anti-nausea meds every eight
hours just to be able to function.. and then getting in a fender bender
last week which means my car won't be back until NEXT Thursday, which
means I've been relying on the kindness of a coworker to get to the office
and back.

So right now the only "fun" thing going on for me is trying to rebuild and
upgrade this '09 Mac Pro that work gave me last week, and y'all have come
out of the woodwork to contribute and sell me bits and parts to get those
upgrades done. It's literally the only reason I've enjoyed life at all the
past week or so, getting to tinker again.

Thanks, so much.

It's not a DIY cop car.. it IS a cop car :) Ex-TXDPS highway patrol cruiser.
I got a police center console installed two weekends ago, and the drivers-
side spotlight will go in as soon as I get it back from the body shop.

I'm turning into Kris Kirby (we used to give him so much hell for driving
P71s. When I got mine I emailed him to apologize...)

Yeah, but I've not turned into THAT GUY yet. I don't pretend to be private
security, etc. I just enjoy the car.

THere's a pretty active local "Panther platform" car club too. Guys with
P71s, regular CVs, Mercury Grand Marquis, one guy with a Marauder, some Town
Cars.. etc.

Thanks for the Blues Brothers reference. That one made my day.

But, "Fix the cigarette lighter."

Cheers!

Love it. The lighter part makes it that much better. :-)

And, back to Bill's original message about this list, it's nice to know
we're good for something! Over the past decade and a half that I have
participated here, it seems that Mr. Bill has put in a lot of effort,
and I am glad that something comes back for all that.

Thanks, Bill.

Made me wonder if could find mine. No such luck, although I did find a
resubscribe request from March 2000. The earliest rescue mail I could find
was from January 1, 2000 (a list membership reminder!). My mail archives
from the 90s are a bit of a mess :(

To add to the chorus - thanks for everything Bill :)

Cheers, MJ

Here, here: in Bill's debt. Glad he is getting excited over his
middle-aged Mac, it can be lots of fun to "max out"
less-than-cutting-edge hardware to see what it can do against the babies!

The very first song I played on the drive home when I picked it up was
"She Caught the Katy".

And the car's name is "Elwood".

And the police center console I got installed two weekends ago
after an eBay score:

Next will be to install the driver-side spotlight that TXDPS removed
when they sold the car, and then I have a Whelen PAP112 airhorn (w/PA)
to get installed, which sounds like this:

Currently I just have the little 10W PA that runs off the CB radio,
but I'm taking that out when I put the Whelen in.

And, I finished the upgrades today.

Mac Pro (2009) with the 4,1 -> 5,1 firmware hack
CPU: 3.2Ghz quad-core Xeon (upgraded from 2.66Ghz quad-core.. I still have
Arctic Silver thermal paste on my fingertips..)
RAM: 32G of nice Dell ECC server RAM in place of the original 16G
Primary Boot: Samsung 830 128G SSD, on an OWC PCIe controller card.
Other drives: Two Intel 710 100G SSDs in primary drive bays,
One Sun-branded 1TB 7200rpm HD in primary drive bay
Video card: Radeon HD5770 (I also ended up with a NV800GT, but the
Radeon arrived today, a week earlier than expected, so
the NV was only in for about two hours).
OS: High Sierra OSX 10.13.4

Thanks, y'all, for all the help and parts and such.
